Yi U (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1542-1609)
|
Note: Yi U was a calligrapher, painter, and civil official active in the mid-Joseon period. Yi was called "Four Perfections" as he was accomplished in composing poetry, writing calligraphy, painting, and playing the zither. He inherited the calligraphic and painting styles of his mother Shin Saimdang (1504-1551). He produced paintings on diverse themes, including grapes, insects and grass, fish and crabs, and the four plants collectively known as the Four Gentlemen (plum blossoms, orchids, chrysanthemums, and bamboo). The influence of Shin Saimdang can be observed in his compositions and depictions of details. In calligraphy, Yi U was impacted by both his mother and Hwang Giro (1521-after 1575), a noted calligrapher of the time, but he formed his own calligraphic style in his later years. |
