Note: Born near Liège (now in Belgium), to a Frankish noble family; his father was Pippin of Landen. After the death of his wife, Bavo distributed his wealth to the poor, built an abbey and became a monk, became a missionary, and then a recluse. He is the patron saint of Ghent and Lauwe, Belgium and Haarlem, the Netherlands. |
