Yu Deokjang (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1675-1756)
|
Note: A painter, calligrapher, and civil official from the late Joseon period, Yu Deokjang is considered one of the three great ink bamboo painters of the Joseon Dynasty along with Yi Jeong (1554-1626) and Shin Wi (1769-1847). He inherited the ink bamboo painting style that had been passed down in his family beginning with Yu Jindong (1497-1561), who had also demonstrated great skill in ink bamboo painting. Yu Deokjang was also influenced by the style of Yi Jeong, who was one of the most influential painters in the mid-Joseon era. As he grew older, Yu developed a distinctive style of painting of his own and led the advancement of ink bamboo painting in the late Joseon Dynasty period. |
