Yi Seongrin (Korean painter and court artist, 1718-1777)
|
Note: Yi Seongrin was a court painter at the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) active in the late Joseon period. His maternal great-grandfather Ham Jegeon and maternal grandfather Ham Sehwi were renowned court painters, and his lineage emerged as a family of court painters as he, his sons Yi Jonghyeon and Yi Jonggeun, and their descendants all served as court painters. He accompanied diplomatic missions to Japan in 1748 and China in 1773, and his drawings from Japan have survived in the form of woodblock prints. Yi was skilled in painting the themes of pine-and-bamboo and birds and animals. A total of thirty real scenery landscape paintings depicting the journeys of tongsinsa diplomatic missions have survived. These paintings appear to have incorporated the style of Jeong Seon (1676-1759), which was widespread at the time, into the eighteenth-century style of real scenery landscape painting (silgyeong sansuhwa) of conservative court painters. |
