|
Note: Art editor for the New Yorker magazine for 21 years; creator of "Eustace Tilley," the top-hatted Regency dandy who appeared on the cover of the first issue of the New Yorker in 1925 and became the trademark of the magazine. He was also the creator of the clean, all-caps, Art Deco typeface, named "Irvin," that captured the spirit of the Jazz Age, and he was responsible for the general look and feel of the magazine. |

Wikipedia (2000-) (Rea Irvin (August 26, 1881-May 28, 1972) was an American graphic artist. Although never formally credited as such, he served de facto as the first art editor of The New Yorker. He created the Eustace Tilley cover portrait and the New Yorker typeface. He first drew Tilley for the cover of the magazine's first issue on February 21, 1925. Tilley appeared annually on the magazine's cover every February until 1994.
