Gutai Bijutsu Kyōkai (Japanese avant-garde group, 1954-1972)
|
Note: Japanese group founded by Jirō Yoshihara and 18 other artists in Osaka, 1954. Yoshihara was older than the other members and financed their activities. In 1955-1956 the group staged a series of actions that anticipated Happenings, and conceptual and performance art in the United States and Europe. Paintings by various members of Gutai were made by puncturing, lacerating, or throwing things at the painting support, with emphasis placed on the action itself. The group published a bulletin 'Gutai' that gained the group an international audience with critics, writers, and artists such as Alan Kaprow. A large collection of Gutai work and documentation is held by the Ashiya City Museum of Art and History, Japan. The group dissolved formally in 1972 after the death of Yoshihara. A Gutai retrospective was held in 1999 at the Jeu de Paume, Paris. |
