|
Note: Of the House of Capet; son of Philip III, King of France and Isabella of Aragon. As Philip IV, king of France, and as Philip I, King of Navarre and Count of Champagne from 1284 to 1305, ruling jointly with his wife, Joan I of Navarre. Noted for struggle with the Roman papacy ending with the transfer of the Papal Curia to Avignon. He also secured French royal power by wars on barons and neighbors, and by restriction of feudal usages. |
