Record Type: Person
Petrie, Flinders (English archaeologist and writer, 1853-1942)

Note: Petrie was an archaeologist whose excavations and surveys revolutionized and set new standards for archaeological field work. He was active in Britain, Egypt, and Palestine. Petrie is noted for realizing the significance of pottery as dating evidence and as well as the importance of recording together all associated finds. Early in his career he surveyed many British sites and he made the first accurate survey of Stonehenge. In 1880 he went to Egypt; from 1880 to 1882 he measured the pyramids of Giza. He conducted important excavations at Naucratis (1885), Daphnae (1886), Abydos (1899), and Tel-el-Hesy; his work at Memphis and Amarna is often considered his most important. He was the author of numerous works on ancient Egypt.
