Valadier, Giuseppe (Italian architect, urban planner, and designer, 1762-1839)
|
Note: Valadier trained at the Accademia di San Luca and at the age of thirteen won a prize in the Concorso Clementino (1775). At age fifteen, he won the Concorso Balestra for architecture. His first important architectural commission was in 1784 for a villa and chapel in Spoleto. Two years later he was named coadjutor and Architetto Camerale for St Peter's, overseeing earthquake damage repair in the homeland of Pope Pius VI, among other projects. Following a brief period (1798-1799) lacking patronage, Valadier began a fruitful association with Prince Stanisław Poniatowski, building his Roman villa. In 1809, he was appointed Direttore dei Lavori Pubblici di Beneficenza, and began to ambitiously refine the Piazza del Popolo, a project which was eventually completed in 1824. Italian architect. |
