Yi U (Korean calligrapher, 1637-1693)
|
Note: Yi U was a calligrapher and royal relative in the mid-Joseon period. He excelled at calligraphy from his childhood. When he grew up, he was placed in charge of writing various seals, books, epitaphs, and stele inscriptions for royal use. His calligraphic style was influenced by his father Yi Yeong (Prince Inheung, 1604-1651), who favored the style of Wang Xizhi. He is viewed as the figure who revived the Wang Xizhi's style in the seventeenth century when a return to classical calligraphic styles predominated. |
