Bartolo di Fredi (Sienese painter, active by 1353, died 1410)

Note: Bartolo had a large shop and a very long career, and was one of the most influential painters working in Siena and the surrounding towns in the second half of the Trecento. His style is marked by the rejection of the concrete figures and naturalism begun by the Lorenzetti to instead favor the flatter, decorative, otherworldly compositions of the earlier Simone Martini and Duccio, which he combined with a new spirit of fantasy and anecdotal details. He died 26 January 1410 (1409 Sienese style).
