Panza di Biumo, Giuseppe (Italian collector, entrepreneur, 1923-2010)
|
Note: Notable collector of contemporary art. He began to collect in the 1950s and eventually came to purchase over 600 works, most of them by American artists. His interests spanned Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, Minimalism, Conceptual art, Environmental art, and beyond. His collection included works by Mark Rothko, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist, George Segal, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Richard Serra, Sol LeWitt, Robert Ryman, Brice Marden, Joseph Kosuth, Robert Barry, Roman Opalka, Maria Nordman, James Turrell, and Robert Irwin. The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (MOCA) acquired as a group the American Pop works in 1984; other works from the Panza collection form part of the Guggenheim Foundation in New York. Works acquired by Panza from the mid-1980s are at his 18th-century villa in Varese, Italy. |
