Pseudo Blesius (Netherlandish painter, active ca. 1520)
|
Note: Painter active in the southern Netherlands who is credited with laying the foundation of Antwerp Mannerism. His name is taken from the (erased) signature 'henricvs blesivs f' on a painting of the "Adoration of the Magi" in Munich. Based on this signature, many works were incorrectly attributed to Herri met de Bles. Friedländer devised the name 'Pseudo-Bles group' and assigned to it a number of works grouped around the Adoration. Friedländer's identification of the artist as the young Jan de Beer, however, has not been accepted. The figures in Pseudo Blesius's paintings are thin in relation to their architectural setting, a setting characterized by Renaissance elements combined with an exaggerated Gothic perpendicularity. The artist's knowledge of anatomy is obviously imperfect and the figures are noted for their angular, odd gestures. The painting of the "Beheading of St. John the Baptist" in Berlin is another good example of the work attributed to Pseudo Blesius. Comment on works: Religious |
