Egloffstein, F. W. von (German printmaker, 1824-1898, active in America)
|
Note: Von Egloffstein served in the Prussian army and then emigrated to the United States as a young man. He was severely wounded in service for the Union in the Civil War. He has been called "The Father of Half-tone Engraving" in the United States, because he was the first to use ruled glass screens, together with photography, to produce engravings. He produced works of various subjects, including landscapes, maps, architectural subjects, and copies after Murillo and other artists. He tried unsuccessfully to convince the U.S. Government to adopt his method to produce bank notes; his technique was complex, used wavy lines, was relatively secret (known by only a few men), and thus he felt would have discouraged counterfeiting. |
