American Colony (American humanitarian group, active in Jerusalem, established 1881)
|
Note: Founded in 1881 by members of the Spafford family, a group of Christian American expatriates; the group increased in size when 37 Christian Swedish expatriates joined it in 1896; members of the colony were involved in humanitarian activities. Around 1900, Elijah Meyers, a member, began taking photographs in and around Jerusalem. His work expanded into the photographic division of the Colony, including Hol Lars Larsson and G. Eric Matson, who later renamed the effort as the Matson Photographic Service. Their interest in archeological artifacts led to interest in their work by archeologists. The collection was later donated to the Library of Congress. |
