Farnese family (Italian rulers, patrons, and collectors, active 13th-18th centuries)
|
Note: This illustrious family originated in Lazio, owning a great deal of territory in the region of Lago di Bolsena. In the 13th and 14th centuries they distinguished themselves mainly as civic leaders in Orvieto and as condottieri, usually in the service of the papacy. They became prominent in Rome under Martin V, who made Ranuccio (died ca. 1450) a senator in 1417. The family entered the Roman aristocracy when Ranuccio's son Pier Luigi married Giovanna Caetani. Pier Luigi's son Alessandro (1468-1549), who later became Pope Paul III, is considered the true founder of the family's fortune and power; he is also remembered for his lavish patronage. With the death in 1589 of Alessandro, Paul III's eldest grandson, the family slowly began to decline as a Roman power. Alessandro's brother Ottavio established Parma as the new center where the family continued to flourish. The Farnese line became extinct on the death of Antonio Farnese (1679-1731), and their entire estate passed to the Bourbon Don Carlos (later Charles III of Spain), son of Philip V of Spain and Elizabeth Farnese, Antonio's niece. The family's collection of art was moved to Naples, where the majority of the antiquities are housed in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, while the paintings are in the Museo e Gallerie Nazionali di Capodimonte. |
