Yi Hwang (Korean calligrapher and scholar, 1501-1570)
|
Note: Yi Hwang was a calligrapher, scholar, and civil official of the mid-Joseon period. He believed calligraphy was a manifestation of his personality, requiring constant training and refining. From 1540 (when he was forty), to 1549 (when he was forty-nine), he made major transformations to his calligraphy. In order to acquire a new style based on his existing calligraphy, which was a Koreanized version of the Songxue style, he studied the calligraphy of a wide range of masters, including Wang Xizhi from Jin Dynasty China and Kim Saeng (711-791) from the Silla era. Later, from 1550 to 1559, he developed a unique style of calligraphy that was later referred to as the Toe style. |
