John XVII, Pope (Roman pope, died 1003)
|
Note: John XVII or XVIII, depending upon the numbering system. Chosen by the patrician John Crescentius III, he succeeded Pope Sylvester II. John was merely a puppet of his relatives the Crescentii, then the most influential family in Rome. He approved an evangelical mission to the Slavs. Before taking orders he had been married; he had three sons who also became ecclesiastics. |
