Hultén, Pontus (Swedish curator, museum director, and author, 1924-2006)
|
Note: Studied art in Copenhagen, then art and ethnology at the University of Stockholm. Early in his career he made experimental films, but is known for his work as a museum director, curator, and author. He championed the careers of Jean Tinguely and members of the Nouveau Réalistes. He is credited with influencing the practice of museum curation by creating exhibitions that combined multiple art forms including film, music, dance, and painting; especially during his tenure as director of the Moderna Museet, Stockholm in the 1960s. He was active in Europe and in the United States, becoming founding director of the museum of modern art at the Centre George Pompidou in Paris, 1973, and later assisting in the foundation of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (1980-1983), and the Jean Tinguely Museum in Basel, Switzerland (1995). |
