Augustus II, King of Poland (Saxon monarch, 1670-1733)

Note: Member of the House of Wettin; younger son of the Elector John George III and Anne Sophie of Denmark. Noted as the first king of Saxony and duke of Warsaw, who became one of Napoleon’s most loyal allies and lost much of his kingdom to Prussia at the Congress of Vienna. Referred to as 'the Strong' due to his stature and strength. Augustus was an enlightened collector, but also used patronage to display his absolute power. He was major patron of Saxon Baroque architecture, painting, sculpture, and decorative arts.
