Record Type: Person
Vanderbilt, Consuelo (American socialite, 1876-1964)

Note: Consuelo was one of the subjects of John Singer Sargent's "Marlborough Family" (1905, Blenheim Palace), one of his greatest formal portraits. Conceived as a pendant to Reynolds' portrait, "George Spencer, 4th Duke of Marlborough, and his Family" (1778, Blenheim Palace), Sargent's group depicts Charles Richard John, the 9th Duke, his wife, Consuelo, and his two sons in van Dyck costume, seen at the base of a great staircase, below flags, trophies, and a bust of John Churchill, the 1st Duke.
