Richter, Gerhard (German painter, born 1932)

Note: Richter studied painting at the fine arts academy in Dresden 1951-1956. He fled East Germany in 1961, settling in Düsseldorf, and continuing his studies at the fine arts academy there. Here he met Sigmar Polke, Konrad Lueg, and Blinky Palermo, and co-founded the Capitalist Realist group in 1963 with Polke, Lueg, and Manfred Kuttner. At this time he began using photographs, both found and created, as source material for his paintings, which he has continued to do throughout his career, in tandem with more abstract and conceptual works.
