Navrátil, Josef (Czech painter, 1798-1865)

Note: Studied at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts (1819-1823), after learning decorative wall painting from his father. Worked as a restorer and as a painter of original works. His paintings decorating Liběchov Castle (1838-1843) are highly regarded. Evidence suggests that he began with portraiture and moved to landscapes and genre paintings. His body of work includes studies of character types, theatrical scenes, and still lifes (that often appear as wall decoration). He moved in urban circles and was active politically, becoming president of the association of Czech artists in 1850.
