Note: Read spent some time South Africa in the early 20th century, although it’s not clear when he arrived there exactly. By early 1918 at the latest, Read was back in the U.S. The 1920 edition of Camera Craft listed him as a new member of the International Photographic Association, specializing in “stereoscopic views on gaslight and printing-out paper, of South African subjects, kaffirs, mining and scenery.”
