Yun Jehong (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1764-after 1840)
|
Note: Yun Jehong was a painter, calligrapher, and civil official in the late Joseon period. He socialized with scholar-officials including Yu Hanji (1760-1834) and Shin Wi (1769-1847). He considered the morally edifying function of painting to be important and employed a painting style that pursued a convergence of poetry, calligraphy, and painting. He began painting in his thirties. Referring to Chinese painting manuals, he sought a unique style while still carrying on the tradition of "true-view" landscape painting (jingyeong sansuhwa) and the Southern School of Painting as pursued by eighteenth-century literati painters such as Yi Insang (1710-1760), Sim Sajeong (1707-1769), and Gang Sehwang (1713-1791). Yun was particularly influenced by Yi Insang, with whom he shared an academic background and hometown. He created paintings on themes including landscapes, figures, the Four Gentlemen, and scholar's rocks. He played a pioneering role in the development of unconventional literati painting styles such as finger painting. |
