Yi Bulhae (Korean painter and court artist, born 1529)
|
Note: Yi Bulhae worked as a court painter at the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) in the mid-Joseon period. In 1559, King Myeongjong (r. 1545-1567) appointed him as a court painter to copy a portrait of An Hyang (1243-1306) that was enshrined at the Sosu Seowon, the oldest private Neo-Confucian Academy in Korea. His paintings demonstrate the crab claw-like brushstrokes of the Li-Guo School of Painting of the Northern Song Dynasty, the Ma-Xia School painting style of the Southern Song Dynasty, and Zhe School painting style of the Ming Dynasty. Consequently, Yi is thought of a painter who practiced the Li-Guo painting style from the early Joseon period and fully utilized the Zhe School painting style popular in the mid-Joseon period. |
