Sahye (Korean painter and monk, active first half of 18th century)
|
Note: Sahye was a monk-painter active in Chungcheong-do and Jeolla-do (provinces) in the first half of the eighteenth century. The Buddhist paintings that Sahye created in Jeolla-do are marked by a contrast between red and green and a sense of spaciousness, while those in Chungcheong-do are characterized by the close arrangement of figures and their elongated bodies. He employed a painting style that highlighted the local characteristics of Buddhist paintings. Among the monk-painters who worked with Sahye are Pilyeong, Bungu, and Chungmyeong. |
