Record Type: Person
Kang Hŭi-ŏn (Korean painter, 1710-after 1781)

Note: Korean painter was a contemporary of Kim Hong-do and Kang se-hwang. He is not considered a literati artist, though he socialized with them. He passed the military examination in 1784 and accepted a military post. He painted landscape and genre scenes that show the influence of Chŏng Sŏn. Gang Huieon was a middle-class (jungin) painter active in the eighteenth century during the late Joseon period. Gang studied painting with his next-door neighbor Jeong Seon (1676-1759). He interacted widely with other painters, including Kim Hongdo, Yi Inmun (1745-after 1824), Gang Sehwang (1713-1791), and Shin Hanpyeong (1726-1809). While influenced by Jeong Seon's "true-view" landscape painting (jingyeong sansuhwa), he developed his own distinctive painting style using realistic perspective, shading, and coloring. His genre paintings were impacted by Yun Duseo and Jo Yeongseok.
