Tanguy, Julien-François (French artists' colorman, collector, and dealer, 1825-1894)
|
Note: Tanguy was from a humble background; an ardent socialist. In about 1860, after working as a labourer in Brittany, he moved to Paris, where he became a colorman (color grinder). He opened his own tiny shop ca. 1873. He was the regular supplier of many Impressionist painters; his generosity towards Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh was of great importance, because he accepted their paintings in exchange for materials and occasionally sold them. Several of Tanguy’s artist-customers painted his portrait. Theo van Gogh deposited a large group of his brother Vincent’s paintings with Tanguy in 1889, although none were sold. |
