Jeu de Paume (French repository, Paris, contemporary)
|
Note: Museum of photography and other contemporary art, housed in a former tennis court (tennis is "jeu de paume" in French) on the north side of the Tuileries park in the center of Paris. The building was constructed in 1861 during the reign of Napoleon III to house tennis courts. It was used from 1940 to 1944 to store Jewish cultural property looted by the Nazis, some of which was eventually destroyed. The Impressionist works exhibited here before 1986 are now in the Musée d'Orsay.
