Nam Gyeu (Korean painter, 1811-1890)
|
Note: Nam Gyeu was a painter and literati figure active at the end of the Joseon period. A descendant of Nam Guman (1629-1711), who once served as chancellor, Nam Gyeu was born into the family of scholar-officials. However, he never held a prominent government post. Instead, he absorbed himself in painting. He specialized in painting butterflies and flowers to such an extent that he earned the nickname "Nam Butterfly." His brightly colored butterflies and flowers were depicted realistically and precisely based on scientific observation. His painting style exerted a considerable impact on other artists, including Baek Eunbae (1820-1901), Go Jinseung (1822-?), and Song Sumyeon (1847-1916). |
