James, Charles (American couturier, born in England, 1906-1978)
|
Note: Born in England, James studied briefly at the University of Bordeaux until he was sent by his family to work in Chicago. He immediately resigned his appointment with a utilities magnate and opened a hat shop. He later relocated to New York to become a dress designer. His first collection appeared in 1928. He commuted between New York and London from 1929 to 1934, when he began working in Paris under the patronage of Paul Poiret designing fabrics. From 1940-1947 he worked in New York, then showed a successful collection in Paris, 1947. He is known best for his sculptural ball gowns. He retired in 1958. |
