Yi Manbu (Korean painter and calligrapher, 1664-1732)
|
Note: Yi Manbu was a calligrapher, painter, and practical learning scholar active in the mid- and late Joseon periods. Both his grandfather Yi Gwanjing (1618-1695) and his father Yi Ok (1641-1698) served as civil officials who excelled at academics and calligraphy. His interest in maps and paintings led him to produce paintings of his hermitage and atlases. He displayed more talent in calligraphy than in painting. He followed in the calligraphic style of Heo Mok (1595-1682), but his seal script and "palbunche", two-part clerical script and eight-part seal script, resembled ancient styles. He argued that the vitality of calligraphy should lie not in its appearance, but in its spirit. |
