Saekmin (Korean painter and monk, active mid-18th century)
|
Note: Saekmin was a monk-painter active in Jeolla-do (province) in the mid-eighteenth century and a disciple of Uigyeom. Following in the footsteps of Uigyeom, Saekmin was active on Jogyesan (mountain) in Suncheon. His work as a monk-painter ranged from the production of Buddhist paintings to the leading of the production and regilding of Buddhist sculptures. Paintings by Saekmin are characterized by slightly raised corners in their eyes and droopy eyebrows as well as a simplified composition omitting figures, a departure from the typical Buddhist painting of the Joseon Dynasty. |
