Vluten, Guillaume (Netherlandish sculptor, active 1435, died before 1445)
|
Note: Vluten, a Netherlandish sculptor working in Paris during the third quarter of the 16th century, represents a conservative current in French sculpture of his time. Philip the Good commissioned the tomb (ca. 1435-1442) for his sister Anne of Burgundy, Duchess of Bedford (1404-1432), for the monastery church of the Célestins, Paris. The tomb, the artist's only known work, originally included seven weepers, one of which has been convincingly identified as representing Philip the Good. Only the white marble effigy of Anne of Burgundy, placed on its original slab of black Mosan marble, has survived (Louvre, Paris). A drawing in the Gaignières Collection shows the monument as it appeared in the late 17th century. Despite Vluten's likely Flemish origins, the effigy is in keeping with a tradition of Parisian tomb sculpture. It is noted for its youthful idealization of features and precisely defined details of costume. |
