Lady Sogyo (Korean painter and courtesan, active second half of 19th to first half of 20th century)
|
Note: Lady Sogyo was a painter active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She was a "gisaeng", a female entertainer, in the Pyongyang area who excelled in calligraphy and painting, particularly on the themes of bamboo and fish-and-crabs. Her ink bamboo paintings followed the literati style that was popular at the time. Her work foreshadowed the emergence of the many gisaeng who later submitted schematized paintings on the Four Gentlemen (plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo) to the Joseon Art Exhibition (Joseon misul jeollamhoe) in the 1920s. |
