Yi Sangbeom (Korean painter and educator, 1897-1972)
|
Note: Yi Sangbeom studied painting from An Jungsik (1861-1919) and Jo Seokjin (1853-1920) starting in 1914. Afterwards, he served as an art reporter for the Dong-A Ilbo, a judge for art competitions, and an instructor at Hongik University and Ewha Womans University. Initially, he took up An Jungsik's style of landscape paintings based on sketching ideas, but later he sought to incorporate the realism of the West into Eastern-style painting. In the 1930s, he developed a modern style of real scenery landscape painting (silgyeong sansuhwa) that was both vernacular and lyrical. In the 1950s, he established the Cheongjeon style of painting forests shrouded in fog and rocky textures. In the 1960s, he pursued rustic and plain depictions of nature through compositions four meters in length. In the 1970s, he sought diversity by employing bright, strong color dots. |
