Stokes, Edward Stiles (American businessman, 1841-1901)

Note: American businessman, born in Philadelphia; he moved in New York City when he was 20 years old. He began working as a produce dealer and later entered the petroleum business with his father, owning the Brooklyn Refinery Company at Hunter's Point. He was responsible for the murder of James Fisks, Jr. in 1872. He was convicted of manslaughter and spent several years in prison before his release in 1884. He died at the home of his sister, Mary McNutt, on November 2, 1901.
