Hopkins, Archibald (American poet, officer, and clerk, 1842-1926)

Note: American poet, military officer, and chief clerk of the United States Court of Claims for 41 years. He was commissioned Lieutenant in the 37th Massachusetts Volunteers and soon moved through the ranks of Captain, Brevet-Major, Lieutenant colonel to Colonel during the American Civil War. After the war he studied law at Columbia College and graduated in 1867. He entered the bar and practiced law in New York City for six years. He was appointed Chief Clerk of the Court of Claims in 1873 and served in this position until his resignation in 1914. He also served in several leadership positions: member of the Board of Directors of the Garfield Hospital, Chairman of the Board of Associated Charities, member of the Board of Visitors of the United States Military Academy, trustee of the Legal Aid Society, Vice President of the trustees of George Washington University, President of the District Society of the Sons of the Revolution, and director of the Washington Society of Fine Arts.
