Heckscher, August (American industrialist, 1848-1941)
|
Note: German American collector, industrialist, real estate developer, and philanthropist; he was born on August 27, 1848 in Hamburg, German,the son of a German doctor. After immigrating to the United States, he worked at his cousin Richard's coal mining business as a laborer. Several years later he formed a partnership with Richard under the name Richard Heckscher & Company, which was later sold to the Philadelphia-Reading Railroad. He next became the president and general manager of Zinc and Iron Company, later consolidated into the New Jersey Zinc Company. He later became president of several other iron, coal, and power companies. He also invested in real estate properties in Manhattan and Long Island. Heckscher was also a renowned philantropist, creating the Heckscher Children's Foundation and advocating for the elimination of slum dwellings in New York City. In 1919 he constructed a museum (the Heckscher Museum of Art) in Huntington to house his art collection. He married Anna Atkins in 1881. Heckscher passed away on April 26, 1941.
