Harewood, Edward Lascelles, 1st Earl of (British aristocrat, ca.1739-1820)

Note: He succeeded his cousin as Baron Harewood in 1796. He was made Earl in 1812. Virtually nothing is known about his activity as collector, if any; the Harewood paintings generally came into the family much later in the century. However, one lot, a Panini, on Jan.2, 1808, is listed in the Christie's files as being sold by Lord Harwood. Many other pictures at the same sale were sold by "Harwood," and these can be followed to other sales, indicating that everything sold by "Harwood" during this period may have belonged to Lord Harewood. It is not clear why just one of the lots in the middle of the sale should be annotated "Lord Harwood" and not any of the others. |
