Note: Bishop whose life was recorded by the hagiographer Sulpicius Severus. Patron saint of France, father of monasticism in Gaul, and the first great leader of Western monasticism. Noted for duty to the poor and peacefulness. A cult grew up around the story of his life and he was canonized as a saint. |
