Wertheimer family (English family of patrons, active 19th century)
|
Note: Asher Wertheimer was a wealthy art and antiques dealer born in London, to a German Jewish family, who commissioned from John Singer Sargent a series of a dozen portraits of himself, his wife, and children. This group represents the artist's largest commission from a single patron. Wertheimer bequeathed nine of the works to the National Portrait Gallery after his and his wife's deaths. Subsequently, the portraits were transferred to the Tate Gallery. Sargent developed close friendships with some of the Wertheimers over the course of his ten-year commission. |
