Record Type: Corporate Body
Artists International Association (English artists' group, founded 1933, dissolved 1971)

Note: English artists' group established to promote united action among artists and designers on social and political issues; it was founded in 1933 but mainly active from 1953 to 1971. Early on, the association pursued a Marxist program but from 1935 on, it avoided identification with any particular style, attracting broad support from artists working in both a traditional and modernist styles. The AIA organized a series of large group exhibitions on political and social themes, beginning with "1935 Exhibition (Artists Against Fascism & War)," held in London. The association strove to increase popular access to art through travelling exhibitions, public murals, and a series of mass-produced offset lithographs entitled "Everyman Prints," published by the AIA in 1940. The AIA also published a journal sporadically and in different formats. Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, and Henry Moore were among the major artists who participated in AIA exhibitions. The AIA officially abandoned its political objectives in 1953, but continued as an exhibiting society until it was dissolved in 1971.
