Hope, John (Scottish courtier and patron, died 1682)

Note: John Hope, a member of an Edinburgh family of merchants and lawyers, bought the estates of Airthrey and Hopetoun in 1678. He drowned in the wreck of the frigate Gloucester off Yarmouth, having saved the life of the Duke of York (later King James VII). His son and heir, Charles, was created 1st Earl of Hopetoun.
