Record Type: Corporate Body
Revel Group (Greek vase painters, active ca. 380-360 BCE in Campania)

Note: This group is named after the Revel hydria in the British Museum. Several painters in this group are so closely connected in style and by their use of similar shapes and decorative patterns that it is sometimes difficult to distinguish their work. This group of vase painters was strongly influenced by the painters of the Dirce Group, particularly the Painter of Naples 2074, from whom many recurring figures are derived. The vases produced by this group belong to a period of transition between Sicily and Campania and thus their provenancies are mixed, some artists established in Campania (e.g. the Revel and Sikon Painters) while others remained in Sicily (e.g. the Scoglitti Painter and the Painter of the Agrigento Pyxis). There are parallels in the artists' treatment of drapery and of the reverse youths with early Apulian vases by the followers of the Tarporley Painter and of the Hoppin Group.
