Note: He is first mentioned in Ávila in the early 1470s. With his brother Pedro, Juan is known primarily for the illumination of the choir books of Ávila Cathedral. Juan headed a workshop that received royal, aristocratic, and ecclesiastical patronage, including King Henry IV of Castile, his father John II of Castile, and Alfonso Carrillo, Archbishop of Toledo.
