His father was Oliver Ditson, founder of the music publishing house Oliver Ditson Company, and his mother was Catherine Delano, descendent of William Bradford, passenger of the Mayflower and later Governor of Plymouth Colony. He died on May 14, 1929 at his home in New York City.
