Note: Born into the powerful house of Tusculum. He was a consul and senator; was ordained just prior to Papal election. He succeeded his brother Pope Benedict VIII. Noted for contributing to the Schism of 1054 by rejecting a proposal by Patriarch Eustathius of Constantinople to recognize that Patriarchate's domain in the East. |
