Yu Suk (Korean painter and court artist, 1827-1873)
|
Note: Yu Suk was a court painter at the Royal Bureau of Painting (Dohwaseo) in the late Joseon period. From 1853 to 1870, he served as a painter-in-waiting (chabi daeryeong hwawon). He received good scores for his pavilion, landscape, and figure depictions at the regular exams (known as nokchwijae) held for court painters. He participated in the production of royal portraits for King Cheoljong (r. 1849-1863) and King Gojong (r.1863-1907) and was recruited several times to document court events. During the early days of his career as a court painter, Yu honed his skills by referring to painting manuals based on the Southern School of Painting, and he excelled in paintings of literary gatherings, genre paintings, and portraits. In his later years, he showed maturity in varying the ink tones and mainly produced paintings on the theme of the Four Gentlemen. |
